Chefs Move to Schools is a nationwide initiative, involved in creating partnerships between chefs and schools. In Massachusetts, Project Bread has enhanced school meals with their Chefs in Schools program. This program has brought professional chefs into schools, where they work with the school staff and the school budget to create healthier, delicious, and student-friendly meals. Studies have shown that bringing chefs to schools can increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables by students.
One Chefs in Schools collaboration has been with Beverly Public Schools, where Chef Kirk Conrad worked with the school nutrition staff and introduced new ideas and recipes, including recipes from Project Bread’s Let’s Cook Healthy School Meals cookbook. Nancy Antolini, Director of Nutrition Services at Beverly Public Schools, has been very happy with the changes Chef Kirk brought to her school meal program. Since working with Chef Kirk, foods made from scratch in Beverly Public Schools has increased from ~50% to 70%.
