Students are helping shape the future of school meals through chef–led taste tests of new Massachusetts Harvest of the Month recipes, all of which will be featured in our upcoming culinary workshop focused on simple, delicious, student tested dishes.
Chef‑Led Taste Tests, One Bite at a Time
Through interactive student taste tests, the JSI chefs worked with students to introduce how fresh, local ingredients can transform familiar school meals. Chefs Kyle and Josh introduced Southwest Roasted Potato Wedges with Chipotle Ranch Dip, Roasted Cinnamon-Chili Delicata, and Baked Pears with Crisp Topping featuring simple techniques and bold, student approved flavors.

Momentum continued as Chef Patty and Chef Steve introduced tasty new kale recipes, Parmesan Kale Crisps and Kale Citrus Salad, proving that leafy greens can be both exciting and student approved. Students’ enthusiastic feedback reinforced how thoughtful preparation and bold flavors make all the difference. With no-added sugar, the Apple Wedges with Pineapple-Orange Dip were a student-approved favorite for dipping!

Celebrating Seasonal Vegetables
Chef Sam and Chef John conducted student taste tests for Sriracha Lime Roasted Carrots and Hot Honey Mashed Squash. Using the roasting technique in these recipes bring out the natural sweetness while keeping dishes simple enough for school kitchens.

Sweet and Savory Favorites in the Making
Two standout recipes, Roasted Cherry Tomato Pasta Bake and Roasted Strawberry Compote and Yogurt Swirl, earned enthusiastic reviews. Students loved the balance of savory and sweetness and the connection to locally grown ingredients.
Student Approved, Chef Driven, Locally Grown
Taste tests go beyond previewing new recipes; they empower students to influence school menus while giving school nutrition teams the confidence that these dishes will succeed schoolwide. Chef expertise, local ingredients, and student feedback are a winning combination, building excitement around school meals and ensuring new recipes are ready to shine on menus statewide.
This collection of student approved recipes will be featured in JSI’s soon-to-be released hands-on culinary workshop, giving school nutrition professionals practical ways to highlight Massachusetts Harvest of the Month crops.
