2017-2018 Nuts & Bolts of School Nutrition Programs
$40 for individual face-to-face trainings or $120 for the entire series

Are you looking to increase your knowledge about and ability to implement the USDA National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs? This training series will provide you with the vital information and skills to improve program operations. Opportunities throughout the year will include both in-person and online sessions. Those who complete seven or more sessions in the series will receive recognition at the Healthy Kids, Healthy Programs Summit in May 2018.
All in person sessions will take place at Framingham State University from 8 am to 4 pm.
All online sessions will take place from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm.

Special Dietary Needs — In-Person
This in-person session will provide an overview of both the newly updated (2017) USDA Accommodating Children with Disabilities in the School Meal Programs and the Managing Life-Threatening Allergies in Schools manuals. Participants will leave with a greater understanding of how to meet the nutritional needs of students with special dietary considerations and how to incorporate the information into your program.

USDA Foods & Inventory Management — In-Person
This in-person session will provide an in-depth understanding of USDA foods such as DoD Fresh, monthly offer sheets, diversion survey, and making the most of your entitlement dollars.

Procurement — In-Person
During this session you will learn about school food service procurement from the high level macro view followed by a drill down into the details of the procurement cycle. Specifically, we will discuss procurement procedures, planning/forecasting, procurement methods, solicitations, evaluation, contract award and monitoring. Lastly, we will outline the procurement review process including what we will be looking for, and hear some feedback about what we have found in our first year of procurement reviews.

Afterschool Snack, At-Risk Snack, & Extended Day Snack — Online
This online session will review other programs associated with school nutrition programs such as Afterschool snack, At-Risk Snack, and Extended Day snack.

Farm to School — Online
This online session will explain how to get started with local food purchasing; offer tips from experienced school nutrition directors for successfully menuing local foods; and provide materials to help you promote local foods in your cafeteria.
- March 20, 2018
Production Records, Recipes, CN Labels, & Product Formulation Statements — In-Person
This in-person session will review production records, standardized recipes, using and finding CN labels, and Product Formulation Statements. Participants will leave the training with the necessary strategies and information to incorporate these topics into operation.

Local Wellness Policies — Online
This online session will review requirements for developing a strong local wellness policy and provide examples and strategies for developing a meaningful policy.
- May 2018
Celebration/Recognition at the Healthy Kids, Healthy Programs Summit.

This three-day conference was held August 1 - 3, 2017 at Framingham State University. It is designed for Massachusetts school nutrition directors to strengthen their knowledge of school nutrition program requirements. Education specialists from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Office for Food and Nutrition Programs will provide essential training on meal benefit issuance, resource management and food service operations.
